Leaked Emails Show Sanders Was Squashed by Democrat Party Machine

With a name like the “Democratic Party” you’d think they’d embrace the concepts of democracy. Instead, they’ve become experts at rigging the system to rain favor upon their chosen candidates and constituencies.

It wasn’t exactly a secret that Bernie Sanders was on the wrong end of the Democrat Party machine. He wasn’t a woman or a minority, he was loud and angry, and his ideas were out of mainstream Democratic thought. More simply, he wasn’t Hillary Clinton.

Clinton, in many ways, was anointed eight years ago, immediately after her stunning loss to an eloquent upstart from Illinois. It was thought to be her turn in the spotlight, the one who would ably carry the Democrat banner into the foreseeable future. The Democratic National Committee did their part to make sure that was the case. They limited the number of debates, they suspended Bernie Sanders’ access to their voter file, and they steamrolled his choices for the party committees (the groups responsible for setting the platform and setting the convention’s rules).

This didn’t sit well with many Democrats, who felt their voices were being shut out of the process in favor of a flawed, wishy-washy candidate in Hillary Clinton. Even Donald Trump recognized the injustice in his convention speech.

“I have joined the political arena so that the powerful can no longer beat up on people that cannot defend themselves,” Trump told the GOP audience. “Nobody knows the system better than me, which is why I alone can fix it. I have seen firsthand how the system is rigged against our citizens, just like it was rigged against Bernie Sanders – he never had a chance.”

And now we have proof. Nearly 20,000 e-mails from the Democratic National Committee were released on Friday, some of which show the lengths that top party officials were willing to go to get Sanders out of the race. Perhaps the most egregious example is DNC CFO Brad Marshall suggested that the party, in an email entitled “No shit,” should “get someone to ask” about Bernie Sanders religious beliefs.

“It might may [sic] no difference, but for KY and WVA can we get someone to ask his believe [sic] in a God. He had skated on saying he has a jewish heritage,” the email reads. “I think I read he is an atheist. This could make several points difference with my peeps. My Southern Baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a Jew and an atheist.”

That’s far from the only smoking gun. Myriad emails among the trove show that DNC staffers openly mocked the Sanders campaign, wanted them to lose, and in fact sought ways to tear them down.

An email from May 21st shows DNC press secretary Mark Paustenbach asking communications director Luis Miranda whether “there’s a good Bernie narrative for a story . . .that Bernie never had his act together, that his campaign was a mess.”

After Sanders announced that if was elected he would oust party chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, she sent an email saying, “This is a silly story. He isn’t going to be president.” Schultz also called Sanders’ campaign manager a “damn liar” after he downplayed the purported violence at the Nevada convention, saying in an email that she found it “[p]articularly scummy that he barely acknowledged the violence and threatening behavior that occurred.” Another email has her calling Weaver “an ASS” for getting Sanders to stay in the race until the convention.

And while the Sanders campaign was working hard on a debate in California—which Clinton had already agreed to—Miranda sent an email to staff that simply read “lol.” Around the same time Wasserman-Schultz sent an email to communications staff listing out talking points defending her decision to dramatically limit the number of debates.

This is what cronyism looks like. Democratic National Committee officials whose job it was to remain neutral ended up putting their finger on the scale in favor of Hillary Clinton. They controlled the news narrative, they mocked Bernie Sanders, and they actively quashed his efforts to get his message out and heard. This is not democracy. It’s a result signed, sealed and delivered by party elites who have been given control of the party apparatus.

Sadly, that’s exactly what Democrats will do if you give them control of the government as well.
